Lips

What Areas Can Be Treated

Rejuvenation of the lips is a commonly requested and frequently performed procedure. There are numerous strategies for treating lips and one of the basic approaches is to add volume through the injection of dermal fillers.

FAQ

Millions of people worldwide have had these injections and the safety of the product is well established and beyond doubt.

There are a few rare medical conditions such as myasthenia gravis which affect muscles, and people with these conditions cannot have treatment. Treatment is also not recommended in pregnant or breast-feeding women.

The injections are virtually painless and may cause a minor stinging discomfort. As the needles are very small, the risk of bleeding or bruising is minimal.

Side effects are uncommon and temporary – you may experience bruising or tenderness at the injection site, a mild headache and very occasionally the treatment may not work as some people are immune to the effects of Botox.

When injecting close to the eye there is a very small chance (significantly less than 1%) of developing a temporary drooping of the eye lid. If this occurs, drops can be used to lessen the effect until it wears off naturally.

Many people worry about having a ‘frozen’ face after Botox; this is almost always due to poor injection technique. At our clinic, all practitioners are extremely experienced so you can be assured you do not need to worry about being left with a frozen face!.

The treatment can usually take about 30 minutes to perform and the results appear almost instantly. You can carry on with your normal life immediately after treatment. The product is broken down slowly by the body and so the results typically last between 6 months and a year, depending on the particular filler used with some fillers lasting considerably longer. After this time you can choose whether to have more treatment to maintain the effect.

You should avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours after injection, and avoid applying make-up for the same period. You should expect the area to be a little swollen after treatment but this usually settles within a day or two. Bruising may occur and sometimes takes a couple of days to develop and a week or so to resolve. We recommend ice packs if there is some swelling or inflammation post-treatment and painkillers if required.

After care advice:

Immediately after treatment there may be some swelling, redness, itching and tenderness. This is a normal result of the injection and will settle. The swelling may remain for up to a few days, the other symptoms usually settle more quickly.

After injections to enhance lips, the swelling can persist for a week or more. During this time the lips can look uneven and so it is important to understand that the result immediately after injection will not always be the final result.

There can be bruising after the procedure and the risk of this is higher if you have used aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen within the last two weeks. Bruising can be quite marked in some instances and the application of ice following treatment may reduce this.

During the procedure the practitioner will have massaged the filler material and the area injected. After Ellansé and Radiesse injections, it is possible to continue massaging for the next 24 hours – this is not recommended unless specifically instructed to do so. This is because the area will have been massaged to the best result at the time of treatment and should not need any more manipulation. Massage also makes any swelling last longer.
Avoid applying make-up for 24 hours to the treated area – this is especially important for the lips.
