Lips

Rejuvenation of the lips is a commonly requested and frequently performed procedure. There are numerous strategies for treating lips and one of the basic approaches is to add volume through the injection of dermal fillers.

FAQs

Is it safe and does it hurt?

We only use hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for treating lips. This is a natural substance that is present in our own body and is responsible for the healthy, soft and smooth texture of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is produced in sterile conditions within laboratories and not derived from animal origin and so the possibility of allergy or skin reactions is virtually zero. We only use fillers with a proven track record for safety and so you can be assured that they are perfectly safe.

The injections may sting and can be slightly painful but many people experience only mild discomfort. Local anaesthetic is present in the syringe mixed with the dermal filler and so the area is numbed as the treatment is performed. It is important that discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum so that we can carry out the best possible treatment. If the procedure is uncomfortable, a dental block can be performed to numb the whole area more thoroughly.

Are there any side effects?

Since the products are hypoallergenic gels, allergic reactions are extremely rare. Side effects are uncommon but can occur and include bruising, tenderness, reddening, and occasionally itching. As the lips are highly vascular, bruising can rarely be quite marked and last for up to a couple of weeks. There is usually a little swelling immediately after treatment but this usually settles within a couple of days. It is best to avoid anti-inflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) for at least 7 days before treatment, unless these have been prescribed for a medical indication. Alcohol within the previous 24 hours can also increase the risk of bruising. Treatments are only carried out after a full medical history has been undertaken.

Injections around the lips may precipitate an attack of cold sores in patients who are susceptible and if necessary a preventative course of tablets may be prescribed to be taken after a lip enhancement.

What can I expect after treatment?

The treatment will usually take about 20 minutes to perform and the results appear instantly. You can carry on with your normal life immediately after treatment. The product is broken down slowly by the body and so the results typically last between 3-9 months, depending on the particular filler used. After this time you can choose whether to have more treatment to maintain the effect.

You should avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours after injection and avoid applying make-up for the same period. You should expect the area to be a little swollen after treatment but this usually settles within a day or two. Bruising may occur and sometimes takes a couple of days to develop and a week or so to resolve. We recommend ice packs if there is some swelling or inflammation post-treatment and painkillers if required.
